A LA CARA BY JAVIER MARCO: HOW A KNOCK AT THE DOOR CHANGES EVERYTHING

One of the major challenges facing our society today is learning to use social media responsibly. Over the recent years, hate speech directed at public figures has multiplied often justified by the anonymity of the internet. From anonymous accounts, countless people insult and attack individuals they do not even know, without facing the consequences of their words. However, the film ‘A la cara’,  directed by Javier Marco, presents a situation very different from what usually occurs in these cases.

Here, the director expands the short film of the same name he made in 2020, telling a story that follows Pedro (Manolo Solo), a man who rents out a room in his house. When he opens the door to welcome a potential tenant, he unexpectedly encounters Lina (Sonia Almarcha), a well-known television host. Her interest is not in the room, but in something much more personal: she wants Pedro to repeat to her face the offensive messages he wrote about her on social media.

Lina’s subsequent decision to stay at Pedro’s house leads to a living arrangement that feels awkward at first. As the days go by, the film explores how the two characters begin to get to know and understand each other, adding layers to the conflict. Most of the action takes place in a confined space, a choice that increases the tension and forces the main character to confront the consequences of his actions.

Sonia Almarcha delivers an outstanding performance, portraying Lina with a blend of strength and vulnerability that carries much of the narrative. The actress had already demonstrated her talent this year in ‘Yo no moriré de amor’, the winner of the Málaga Film Festival, and here she confirms her immense acting ability. For his part, Manolo Solo builds a complex and convincing character, successfully conveying the discomfort of someone forced to confront himself.

Through this story, Javier Marco condemns the harassment that many public figures face on social media and reflects on how easily some people attack others from behind a screen. The film highlights how the distance provided by a screen can lead to a level of aggression that would rarely be displayed in a face to face interaction.

Although the premise was particularly novel when the original short film was released, the topic still feels relevant today. ‘A la cara’ is a film that is simple in its approach but effective in its execution. Its pace and ability to provoke reflection make it an entertaining and accessible work that, in addition to captivating the viewer, invites the audience to question how to interact with others in the digital environment.
