ALAÏA FW24: A quiet collection where the curves of the women are embraces with Merino Wool
Pieter Mulier has been the creative director of Alaïa for over three years now and he is been able to understand the core of the brand. Through the diverse collection he has been presenting, he is showing how important it is to stay true to the believes of Azzedine and to understand clothing as he did. Alaïa is more than the clothes. It’s about life, about being together.
That’s why for the presentation of this season is gathering select people from the fashion industry to witness the show. He wanted that people could feel and breath the clothes without any distance between the model and the audience. The event was set at the Alaïa Flagship in Paris, with a selection of furniture designed by Marc Newson and Philippe Malouin.
After showing on a bridge over Seine, this familiar location reminded the audience to gather together and enjoy the things they liked the most, in this case quality pieces of clothing. The main inspiration for this collection were curves (of women) and circles (of friends), we can see clearly in the construction of each design and how adaptable to the body it seems.
All of the 43 looks were made using a certain merino wool provided by a supplier that has worked for the brand over four decades. The creative director was able to research and experiment over a year to discover new and innovative ways of using the same yarn and fabric with an expertise supervising the entire process. Some pieces have incredible pattern making and cutting, for example, in look 5 and 11 we can find a jacket that is intertwined with the construction of a dress, resulting in a only piece, mixing practicality with subtlety.
The exploration and results of the research are translated into simple and pure pieces that encapsulate the essence of the brand. Finding a freedom in a brief that might sound impossible to expand and create over. The music was made in collaboration with Gustave Rudman, who has created music inspired by Alaïa, helping the team with the creation of the whole collection. In short, an ode to intimacy where the textile and the body of the women, that is carrying the piece, are the center around everything.
