MAD COOL FESTIVAL 2024: An eclectic music experience for a variety of people in Madrid

Since 2016, Mad Cool Festival has been the meeting point for all music lovers in the city of Madrid in the middle of the summer. In a first instance, this festival was thought to embrace the national and international indie/rock scene, but through the years the organization has started to include some pop stars too.

The first inclusion, that I remembered vividly because I was there, was ROSALÍA in 2019. This point was a no return one, the way people were all over the space chanting almost the whole concert was never seen before. Then in 2020, they planned a more pop based festival (Taylor Swift, Billie Eillish…) but due to pandemic they cancelled. This was a devastation for young audiences, because it is not going to be at that level of pop perfection again.

This 2024, the festival is more diverse than other years. From the 10th-13th July, Madrid is going to be an effervescent bubble of international music freaks. The first day, Wednesday 10th, Dua Lipa is going to present her new upcoming album, with singles like Houdini and Training Season in it. We wish to see visuals and looks like she served on the last tour. Janelle Monáe and Sexyy Red are also presenting their album focused shows, excited to see The Age of Pleasure and Hood Hottest Princess on live. Rels B is going to steal the day for R&B and Afro beats with her repertoire, we will see if he drops an album or what for his festival tour. On a more relaxed note, we can find comfort in Nothing But Thieves, Tom Odell with her new album Black Friday or the incredible songwriting of James Arthur. In other hand, you could see some rock music with Soccer Mommy or enjoy some Catalonian anthems with Julieta’s show.

The 11th July, Pearl Jam will perform, an icon of the grunge movement, a compilation of their best songs. For the rock enthusiasts, we pick Greta Van Fleet for this day, due to their iconic albums. Combining folk, indie rock, and R&B with traditions, we will find the show of Michael Kiwanuka, a special pick for his 2019’s album KIWANUKA. This is a relaxing day and the shows of Bomba Estéreo and Nia Archives are going to give that, with a beer and some quality people it will be the best moment of the day. For instance, you can go to see Sofia Tukker and experience their positive and vibrant dance music.

On Friday, Måneskin are going to give the gig of their lives with the live presentation of RUSH. The rhythm is not going to increase with the pop perfection of Jessie Ware or the Afro beats of Rema. In any case, you could go on an easy trip with the DJ set of Acid Arab or the electric church that Black Pumas embodies. The pop moment of the day is without a doubt Alec Benjamin, a charming voice that reflects into his life throughout an extensive catalog. Arriving from Coachella, Depresión Sonora will perform the same show with upbeat songs that express encapsulated feelings. Last but not least, we could go to see Stay Homas and their indie proposal with songs in Catalonian.

Shaking heads is the title that I will put to the 13th. With The Killers, Bring Me The Horizon and Avril Lavigne, this day is going to give a headache to more than one person. Ashnikko is presenting her album WEEDKILLER and Genesis Owusu his STRUGGLER, both high impact sounds with a lot of flavour into them. To relax a bit, we have the live presentation of My Soft Machine by Arlo Parks or Midnight Butterflies by Sea Girls. But we cannot finish the festival without going to The Loop stage, where electronic music is up and going all day, especially with The Blessed Madonna set.

We wish to see you there enjoying the music and the vibe that only a city as Madrid can bring. We hope to see some emerging talent in the Mad Cool Talent by Vibra Mahou and interview them. Excited for what the summer is preparing for us.
