Met Gala 2024 Unveils Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion Theme

The Met Gala 2024 is already making waves across the internet. Just days ago, the fashion world got a sneak peek into the theme of the year’s most significant global fashion exhibition, set to grace the halls of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

Scheduled for May 6th, 2024, in New York City, the Met Gala has long been a staple on the fashion calendar, traditionally held on the first Monday of May since 2005. With the exception of 2020 due to the pandemic (canceled and rescheduled to September 2021), each edition has glittered on this iconic day.

Unlike previous years, the spotlight for the Met Gala 2024 won’t solely focus on a single designer. Instead, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion will delve into sustainability through a unique lens – «It’s basically an ode to nature,» says Andrew Bolton, Chief Curator of the Costume Institute and the mastermind behind this concept. «Nature as a metaphor for fashion, its fragility, and transience.» Expect designs inspired by the beauty of flora and fauna, a nod to nature’s wonders.

The narrative of the exhibition will explore 400 years of history, from the 17th century to recent acquisitions from esteemed fashion houses like Phillip Lim, Connor Yves, and Stella McCartney.

Particular highlights of the exhibit include 50 delicate pieces from archival collections, too fragile to be worn again. These items, including an Elizabethan bodice from the 17th century and a silk creation by British designer Charles Frederick Worth, will be displayed in glass coffins. However, thanks to immersive technology, they will «awaken» in a three-zone experience – earth, sea, and sky – with each section featuring around 26 walkable bell-shaped structures, resembling fashion terrariums.

Loewe and TikTok will be sponsoring the Met Gala 2024 exhibition, further emphasizing the significance of this grand event.

The Garden of Time: MET Gala 2024 Dress Code Unveiled

In sync with the exhibition’s theme, The Garden of Time will dictate the dress code for attendees gracing the dazzling red carpet. Inspired by J.G. Ballard’s 1962 novel of the same name, where Count Axel and his wife inhabit a sophisticated, secluded residence, this dress code encourages references to the novel’s enchanting garden and the angelic atmosphere surrounding nature.

The star-studded event is set to be hosted by acclaimed personalities including Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, and the iconic Anna Wintour. Jonathan Anderson, the creative director of Loewe, and Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, will serve as honorary co-chairs of the gala, ensuring that the MET Gala 2024 remains one of the most anticipated and prestigious events of the year.
